When you get what you pay for the Radar Caymans are exactly what you are paying for.  These wheels come free with Riedell’s R3 skate package and as far as a first time skater goes these wheels work just fine for the first couple of practices.  After that they should be tossed in the garbage.  Let’s break it down…

I’ve never skated on a more uneven wheels.  At high speeds my feet feel like that are vibrating.  They are a 95a hardness but the only time I get decent grip is when skating outdoors on rough concrete.  Should I even discuss the quality and feedback of these wheels?

Basically, never pay money for these wheels unless you plan on spray painting them gold and wearing them around your neck on a chain.  If you have a set that came with your skates I highly recommend spending a little bit of money and getting into better wheels.

This is one rare instance when ditching these wheels and upgrading to anything else WILL make you a better skater.

I’m a pretty new skater, but even my skills are eclipsed by these incredibly chintzy wheels! I have a massive purple bruise on my left thigh from falling over and over and over from losing grip, or just tweaking out all funny.

You can get a BRAND NEW pack of 4 wheels on eBay for $5.00, that kind of tells you how crappy they are! I’ve found out the very, very hard way that wheels aren’t just wheels. Don’t make the same mistake!

I am a brand new derby girl and I’m still learning about skates and wheels and such–I know that these wheels are junk, so will definitely be getting new ones for bouts. Are the Caymans suitable for putting on my skates for outdoor rec skating?

    • I suggest not. The main thing about outdoor wheels that you will find is that they are really soft so you don’t feel the bumps and cracks and such. I find they do make a good paper weight.

I was skating on these for a long time since they came with my R3s and I didn’t have the money for outdoor wheels. Once I switched to outdoor wheels I realized how much the Caymans were hindering me. My skill level jumped almost instantly. One thing the Caymans were very good at was stopping on a dime when you hit any kind of debris and nearly sent you on your face. Like the article says, the Caymans are good for about three runs and then they should be thrown out. I still keep mine as a keepsake, but otherwise I don’t miss ‘em.

PLEASE GET RID OF THESE WHEELS ASAP.

i dont hink i have ever read a review that is more truthful and apt, these wheels are slippy, hard as hell, i felt every grain of sand/dust on the sports hall floor and the vibrations that came from them were awful!

i feel reidell and radar should bin these wheels and charge a few quid more for the standard R3 skate and put halfway decent wheels on from the start.

I WONDER HOW MANY NEWBIE INJURIES CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THESE TERRIBLY DANGEROUS AND LOW QUALITY WHEELS?

I’d say 9/10 slips and slides that have resulted in falls that have caused serious injury are the result of a newbie who needs more grip being given these awful wheels.

if you like living and you have just a few quid spare throw these wheels as far away from you as you can or better yet give them to your enemy to learn to play derby with……its not murder if they break their neck on skates lol :)

Go but almost anything from Atom i have 6-7 sets of atom wheels and they are truly awesome. :)

  5. Oh my god too true, throw these in the bin, do not use them outdoor, every bump crack stone you feel through your whole body, they make you think skating is impossible especially when you put skates on the first time ever, and have no clue that there is such a thing as an outdoor wheel. I thought I’m never going to be able to skate if this is how hard it is. Luckily I spoke to a friend who advised me there was outdoor wheels, thank god or I think my skates would have been packed away for life with caymans on them. When I put outdoor wheels on I realised I could actually skate. So many times on Caymans outdoor as a newbie in those first few weeks, I totally stacked it, and then fractured an elbow. So no skating for two months, then I tried again on the caymans for about 2 weeks until my friend advised me about outdoor wheels. Another friend on her first day of having her skates on with caymans, was skating outdoor (even though I’d advised her to get outdoor wheels) broke her arm, 8 screws, 2 plates, 3 hour operation later, I think she’ll now throw them in the bin as I suggested.

they should all be burned and never talked about again. garbage

  7. My poor little derby sis was skating on these! I lent her a set of Mojos and she said she felt instantly more comfortable on her skates. Why is Riedell outfitting any of their packages with Caymans? I’ve heard nothing but bad things about them.

  8. I don’t agree with your opinion. These wheels aren’t bad. I’ve been skating for a long time, speed and derby skater and these wheels are a softer compound; closer to a 91A which is very soft and a good grip for concrete and dirty indoor floors. For the money; if you have an extra Ten bucks, I’d have a few sets for back-up. Compared to the old “Huggers” and “Zingers,” I think these wheels are fine. I can see someone starting with them and growing into a better set, but they are also great for building muscle with a little extra resistance. I’ve have much more expensive skates besides the R3′s but I bought a set to try them out and I don’t have a problem with them at all. You can’t beat that price for a complete pair of skates. I’ve had mine 3 years and clean the bearings once a month and the wheels before and after every session, take care of them and they will last a very long time.
