I’ve been hearing really great things about these mouth guards for roller derby but I’ve never had a chance to use them. What do you all think about them?

The price on these is fairly good, better if you can split a two pack with a teammate.

Although I struggled with the initial fit (and refit), the comfort is, eventually, phenomenal. It stays effortly in your mouth and is almost completely unintrusive when talking or drinking. I have been known to forget I’m wearing it and leave practice with it still in my mouth.

I’ve been using mine for nearly a year and it’s held up very well. I soak it in listerine and brush it regularly. Unlike, boil-and-bite styles, this mouth guard doesn’t seem to wear or compress much over time (but I also don’t chew on it nearly as much).

My one complaint about this style is that, compared to more traditional mouth guards, it doesn’t seem to protect as well as its claims would have you believe when you’re hit in the chin with upward force. Honestly, it’s such a rare occasion that it’s hard for me to judge accurately, but both times I’ve been hit in such a way while wearing the Protech Dent, I saw stars. That never happened to me with other mouth guards, but I can’t say for sure I ever received similar hits.

Still, regardless of my doubts of its efficacy in terms of impact absorbtion, this is my brand of choice for all the other benefits. If it’s good enough to pass gear check, it’s good enough for me.

I love my protech dent mouthguard. I actually was skeptical about it, but I took it to my dentist and he said that it was an excellent fit and that I shouldn’t waste my money on one custom made, unless I felt it was absolutely necessary from a safety point.

As for the actual mouth guard, I love being able to drink and talk with my mouth guard in. I had to mold mine a few times before I had a perfect fit, but now I love it. I can’t imagine what I would do if I had to go back to a boil and bite. I highly recommend the protech dent.

I agree with pretty much everything Cruel Whip said. It may take a few tries to get a really nice fit, but once you got it figured out, you’re set. Definitely clean it now and again (I guess you should with all mouth guards) but since I have a white one, it’s more noticeable when it’s gross…

I guess I haven’t gotten jacked in the jaw too much. I’ve had a couple occasions when my own shoulder jacks me in the face during a hit and it still catches me off guard but no damage that i’m aware of!

I definitely recommend it! I forgot it once and had to wear my old one and it was horrible! never going back.

I love this mouthguard. I have a habit of gnawing on my mouthguards when I’m focusing, and this mouthguard holds up well to that abuse. I have softened it to re-fit it a few times, and it is very comfortable to wear.

I have really loved this mouthguard. It is thin enough to allow for very easy talking and drinking. I get hit in the face a lot and I KNOW it’s saved my teeth more than once. Because it’s very hard, I think maybe once it cut my lip on a face-hit, but thankfully lips heal pretty fast. It is a snugger fit than my custom one — this has ups (stays in place) and downs (can exacerbate a headache). But the ProTech far more comfortable — less of that “my mouth is full of mouthguard” feeling. Because of that, I remove it less during breaks in play — I’ve heard that makes it more sanitary and less likely to get lost or left somewhere.

  6. I love my Protech. It’s so comfortable that I’ve driven home after practice with it in my mouth. One thing – if you have one, make sure you keep a spare in your bag. Somebody rolls over a regular mouthguard and it just gets dirty. Somebody rolls over a Protech and it shatters.

I love the protech mouthgaurd. Ive been using the product for about a year now & have definitely taken some hard hits. The only downside is: be careful if you keep your gear in your car in the heat. I leave my gear in my car for days I don’t have time to run home after work before practice. During the summer the heat warped the mouthgaurd. I had to re-heat it under water to make it fit again. However, doing this after two different occasions the material wore thin in spots and was practically disappearing. Thank god I kept the second one for myself. Before I fitted the extra one, I had to use old mouthgaurds. It made me appreciate the protech product even more. Must have for every derby player.

I love this mouthguard. It took me a long time to fit, and quite a few tries, but now that it’s shaped properly it’s great. Super comfy, and I love being able to talk and drink water without having to take it out and getting slobber on everything and sweat on my mouthguard.
