Derby Writing 101 - your first bout (Getting ready)

You’ve just been told that you’ve been selected as the league reporter for your local bunch of hard-working women that like to turn left and skate fast. Congratulations. You are now on the hook for making somewhere between one and four teams look awesome in print…and you’ve never actually written an inch of sport copy. Don’t panic.
My wife and I had followed roller derby when I got recruited to be ‘Garrison’ in 2008. Suddenly, I had to concern … Continue reading »

Derby Writing 101 - Getting Started

So.  You want to find a writer for your league.  Let’s start with the basics.
What does a writer do?
A writer for a roller derby league follows the action at bouts, takes copious notes of how the games go down, and then goes home and writes about the whole thing.  They can do a lot more, mind you…but everything else is built off of that base. Some leagues call their writer a ‘sidelines reporter’ or ‘league reporter’ … Continue reading »

Derby Writing 101 - an introduction

There aren’t many writers for roller derby out there. Most leagues assign part of their marketing or PR committee team – or maybe an injured skater – to say a few words about the bouts they took part in. With your basic startup league that has only just begun bouting, that’s understandable. You’re putting your energy into getting your corner of roller derby going.
However…it’s a little nuts for a league to have been around more than a year or two without someone … Continue reading »

More video Strategery from Eastern Regionals

Rather than writing a lot, I think the strategies in this clip speak for themselves:

Penalty burn
Saving the Goat
Working a “stationery” wall
Awareness of penalty box rotations

Enjoy my rudimentary VH1 inspired balloons. If someone would send me an MP3 of a sound clip for balloons opening and closing, that’d be awesome!

Delaying the Jam Start – Jam 1

From the day I started derby, strategy has been one of my greatest assets as a skater. That doesn’t mean I’m the best at it, but I’ve made it a regular part of my training. I’ve also always been in charge of producing video for the leagues I’ve been on and since I love strategy, I always instruct my camera operators to capture video in a manner that’s best for future study and training.
I hope … Continue reading »

Delaying the Jam Start

Last year it was all about the slow pack and this year it’s the delayed start but I find myself confused as to why we are employing this strategy in most situations. There are few situations when delaying the start makes sense but in those same situations it should be the other teams goal to get that pack and those jammers moving asap.
I fear for the fans. Watching this strategy for the most part is … Continue reading »

Lone blocker on the track!

Welcome to the situation. Sadly, the Jersey Shore got to this phrase before we did, but we like the name…so screw ‘em.
The normal format of these situations will be that we will explain a real-life problem that we have seen on the track (and we will take submissions). We’ll then give readers a chance to respond on the way they’d handle it if they were the player involved. We’ll do ref ones … Continue reading »
