These wheels come in 38mm Width/62mm Height for indoor skating, so they are a relatively narrow wheel. I wore these wheels for about 3 months, 2 seasons ago thinking I was getting the old version of them when I ordered. I was surprised with a newer version of a wheel that I did not want changed. They were great for speed and juking around the track, and for stopping. (The old version came in a … Continue reading »
Today Radar Wheels announced a new speed wheel the Sting Ray which looks to be a 43mm version of the popular 31mm Radar Diamonds with the exception of a 9 hole revolver style hub to help keep the weight down.
If you get a chance to skate on them please let the roller derby world know and give us a review.
If I were married to Stinger Slims, I don’t think it would end happily. They’re so light, I’d feel fat. They’re hub is rigid – the thing has no give at its core. They’re really grippy and can’t let go, but they’re also fast which is not a quality I’m looking for in a life-long partnership. Stinger Slims don’t know how to compromise, and marriage is all about compromise.
I wouldn’t ever want to marry them, but I’d … Continue reading »
Grip is the word of the day with Poison Slims. They’re INCREDIBLY grippy. As such I’d totally recommend them to fresh meat.
Let’s face it: freshies benefit from grip. It is far easier to learn skills when you can trust your wheels to be more predictable instead of slipping out from underneath you at any moment. Unsteady legs and harder wheels often mean asses on the floor.
The narrow profile is the interesting thing for me. Firstly, being on … Continue reading »
Also just announced from Atom Wheels the Super-G which is once again 59mm tall. Here is what Atom has to say for their new wheels.
Look! Out on the track!! It’s a bird….it’s a plane…..It’s SUPER G!!! This amazing new wheel, made of practically all urethane,is one of Atom’s best derby inventions yet. The Super G features what we call our ‘MINI-CORE.’ The mini-core allows for a large molded front lip while still providing ample support … Continue reading »
Atom Wheels are dropping some new wheels at RollerCon 2011 as well. It seems like 59mm is the new black as they launch a 59mm version of their popular Poisons and are calling them cleverly Venom. I’ve never really been a fan of the Poison line of wheels from Atom for roller derby. They are great if you skate on a horrible surface and some leagues do on a regular basis but for most derby … Continue reading »
The D-Rod is my go-to wheel for grippy wood floors. As much as skaters fret about slippery surfaces, extremely grippy surfaces can also downgrade skater performance. Glue yourself down with sticky wheels on a grippy floor, and you interfere with your ability to have the controlled slide necessary for proper crossovers, hockey stops, and plow stops. D-Rods offer a good balance of grip, roll, and controllable slide for those times when you’re on a surface … Continue reading »
